Treating pigmentation

Carolina BrennanWhat's Happening at The Anti Ageing Clinic

Pigmentation is just one of the side effects of too much sun exposure without sun protection. Prevention, through the daily use of sunscreen, is the best method of averting the occurrence of most types of pigmentation.  Unfortunately, because most of us were not aware of the importance of adequate sun protection when we were growing up, many of us have a good chance of seeing a form of pigmentation crop up somewhere on our body.

Pigmentation can take the following forms:

  1. Melanoma – Brown spots on the body
  2. Melasma – Brown freckling patches that can appear on the face, upper lip and hands.  When the patches are not raised, rough or crusted, they are considered to be benign.
  3. Hyper Pigmentation – an increase in melanin production stimulated by sun exposure.  It can also be stimulated by birth control pills, pregnancy and oestrogen replacement therapy.
  4. Chloasma, liver spots, sun spots or age spots – small brown patches on the skin which have nothing to do with liver function, but are always caused by unprotected exposure to the sun.

Causes of pigmentation can vary from sun damage due to lack of sunscreen or hormonal changes in pregnancy and during the menopause to external factors such as spraying perfume on the skin and it reacting with the sun.

When it comes to treating different types of pigmentation it is important for us as therapists to consider the depth of the discoloured pigment.  In most cases the discolouration is superficial but in a few cases, the discolouration lies deep within the dermis.

Less pain, less gain – permanent hair reduction and removal

Carolina BrennanWhat's Happening at The Anti Ageing Clinic

Hair removal is an issue for most women at some stage of their life.  Whether it is waxing before a summer holiday, plucking or threading their eyebrows or tweezing out strong dark hairs that appear on the chin; women have always had to work hard to keep unwanted hairs at bay.  These days, even men are having their chests and backs waxed in the quest to be a modern or ‘metro man’.

In fact, hair growth can affect up to 70% of the population at some time during their lives and with the increasing popularity of hair removal, there have been a number of developments in permanent hair reduction technology.  Through research into new technology, I have been able to introduce less painful methods of hair removal for clients who don’t like waxing, electrolysis or threading.

Understanding how hair grows:

  1. Anagen – hair is growing and is connected to a blood supply at its root
  2. Catagen – hair starts to detach from the root
  3. Telogen – hair is about to fall out and may be replaced by another hair.

The best time to treat hair is during the Anagen stage when it is still attached to the root.

There’s still time to get that bikini body!

Carolina BrennanWhat's Happening at The Anti Ageing Clinic

Summer is finally upon us (despite the current rain) and getting fit for the holidays has to be at the top of most women’s lists.  It’s the time of year when we are inundated with women looking to detox, banish cellulite, tighten up loose skin and lose inches from their mid-section.  Whilst there is no quick, last-minute fix, there are some fantastic treatments that will help you to get that bikini-body in no time.

Reducing cellulite and localised fat

Cellulite is one of those universal problems that affects women of all shapes and sizes.  Unfortunately, there is nothing that can fix it permanently, as even liposuction doesn’t change its appearance, but there are many things that can be done to reduce it long term.

Endermologie has long since topped the list of treatments that has proven to be effective at reducing the appearance of unsightly lumps and bumps.  It is in fact, the only medically-proven treatment to address all the concerns of cellulite, loose skin and localised fat.

It is a technique that uses a machine devised in France by an engineer who was undergoing physiotherapy following a car accident.  Originally designed to make the physiotherapist’s work easier, the machine proved to offer other benefits.

The technique, called Lipo Massage, is administered by specially trained therapists who use the equipment to manipulate the skin’s underlying fat cells in order to break down and reduce fluid in the surrounding connective tissues.  The result is a smoother appearance and improved circulation to the area treated.

Each treatment begins with a thorough consultation to assess problem areas.  A tailored programme of treatments is recommended according to each individual client’s needs, usually beginning with twice-weekly appointments.  Clients begin to see results in as little as six treatments, but the overall result is usually most evident after a course of between 10 and 20 treatments.
